Dancing With Father Time

Five years ago I went to Point Pelee Nation Park to shoot some photographs.  I shoot large format black and white negatives and hand-print using the old wet chemical process.  Point Pelee is the southern-most part of mainland Canada and is a spit of sand that extends out into Lake Erie.  At the end of the point the waves run into each other and I was there to capture this on film.  With the waves running into each other like this there is a lot of turbulence in the water, strong currents and undertow.  All around the area there are signs posted to stay out of the water.  Once every few years someone disregards the warning signs and goes for a swim - most often they don't make it.

On this day two teenage brothers decided to go for a swim.  One was rescued and the other drowned.  I witnessed the whole event and was helpless to do anything to assist the drowning boy.  It's never easy to watch someone's life plucked from them, but when you are helpless to do anything to change the outcome, it seems even harder.  That event has stuck in my mind over the past few years and came to the surface as i was writing "Dancing With Father Time."

The idea behind the song is that we don't know how much time we have on this earth, and that it can end very quickly.  One moment you're here, the next you may be gone.  I'm still here, and a long as I'm here I'm going to dance with Father Time.  Dancing is meant to fun, an expression of joy.  So dance every day, and as the last couple of line say, "make each step count in this mortal dance, before the time comes for that final trance."

I was at the lake a few years ago, saw a boy swept away in an undertow

Father time well he reached down Gave that boy and angel gown

I'm still dancing with Father time

When I was young the summer was so long Now I'm older I just blink it's gone

Father time plays with your mind Life runs fast and you're running blind

I'm still dancing with Father Time Dancing with Father Time

The tempo keeps increasing as the years go by I'm not kidding when I say time flies And I'm not ready to say goodbye I'm just dancing with Father time

I just don't know where time goes I only know that it never slows

Always busy the daily grind Life and time are so entwined

Oh what happened to that gentle sway Now it's double time and dance away

Make each step count in this mortal dance Before the time comes for the final trance

Dancing with Father Time Dancing with Father Time

And the tempo keeps increasing as the years go by And I'm not kidding when I say time flies

And I'm not ready to say goodbye I'm just dancing with Father Time I'm just dancing with Father Time
