My Sixties

(Marty Lowman)

The story behind "My Sixties" is quite self-explanatory.  I was a in my teens in the sixties, and yeah, I remember that time well.  It was a decade that brought a lot of social and political change, but for those of us who were in our youth at the time, it was a lot of fun.

Time flies and as I look back I can't believe where all the years have gone and as I'm beginning to experiencing my sixties, I'm kind of hoping that history does repeat itself - at least my personal history.  I'm looking forward to a time of reduced responsibility and a time that I can kick back a bit and enjoy whatever might interest me at the time.  If my sixties are like the sixties, it's gonna be a lot of fun.

The sixties started for me when I first heard the Beatles play Then the Brits invaded and the kids migrated to Woodstock and Monterey

Dylan sang about changing times, the Byrds sang Turn, Turn Turn, While the Doors played Light My Fire, we watched that old world burn , We watched that old world burn

Leary told us to tune in drop out experience what was meant to be We had sit ins and love ins and in the flowered vans love was free

We didn't trust the man, we did our own thing, and lived life without care Women burned their bras, and the guys grew out their hair

Just last week I turned fifty-nine, damn sixty aint far away I don't feel it, but I believe it when the mirror shows all this grey

And I really can't say where the years have gone but I'm not really feeling sad Cause if it's like they say and history repeats, then the sixties won't be so bad The sixties won’t be so bad

Chorus

If my sixties are like the sixties It's gonna be a lot of fun

I'll get to take some time and do some things I've always wanted to get done

And if my investments turn out OK I'll retire somewhere in the sun If my sixties are like the sixties It's gonna be a lot of fun

I probably won't buy a VW van and paint some flowers on the side But I might just get a Harley and get some Easy Rider Vibe

Have the Classic Rock on the radio and even though I'm not in my prime And I won't need to punch a clock, I won't have to work, hell it'll be like going back in time

Oh there might be some aches and pains and a few things that don't work quite like they used to But I'm not worried about that, cause there's a pill for that and

I'll get by with a little help from my friends Might even get high with a little help from my friends

Chorus

If my sixties are like the sixties It's gonna be a lot of fun I'll get to take some time and do some things I've always wanted to get done

And if my investments turn out OK I'll retire somewhere in the sun If my sixties are like the sixties It's gonna be a lot of fun
