Cowgirl on Coffee

Cowgirl on Coffee came about as a result of meeting Cowgirls on Coffee on line.  I was writing songs for a Nashville-based promoter who suggested I might want to write a couple of songs about cowgirls.  Not knowing much about cowgirls I decided to do a bit of reseach.  I googled and came across a myspace page "Cowgirls on Coffee."  This is an on-line company run by two real cowgirls, Sonya and Josie.  They talk about the cowgirl lifestyle, about being free, loving horses and the outdoors, they are artists, very good artists (and you really should check them out on Facebook) activists and really a couple of amazing young women.  And they selll coffee on-line - it's a buckin' good brew.  I couldn't resist creating the song around the idea of a Cowgirl on Coffee.

I sent the song to Nashville (I'll blog about the Nashville experinence one of these days) and nothing happened with it there in the sense that no major artist recorded it, but it remains one of the crowd pleasers - it always gets a smile or two when I play it live.

A couple hours east of Austin, ready for a break Found small town rodeo, got a place near the gate

Things were winding down and it was getting kinda late A raven-haired cowgirl burst out to run her figure eight

Her form was spectacular, she didn't miss a beat In a cloud of dust her hat blew off, and landed at my feet

She rode in my direction, she saw her hat in my hand That day would turn out much better than I'd planned

I held out the hat and said,  let me buy you coffee? Her green eyes sized me up,  then she smiled down at me

She said I like it hot and strong Meet me at my trailer - I won't be long She had taken off her spurs, and had slipped into a summer dress

She said there ain't no Starbuck's here, but Shelby's diner sells the best

We found a table in the corner, and while we drank coffee by the hour Coffee wasn't the only thing brewing here

 Chorus

Some cowgirls they drink lemonade, sweet tea or mayber beer Mine likes her coffee cause she runs in high gear

She likes it hot, she likes it strong - she like to sip it all night long When the cowgirl's on coffee you can't go wrong

We were buzzed from the new found love and from the caffeine blast She took me to a honkytonk, we danced line, two step and fast

But when the band played slow and we held each other tight Right then and there we knew we fell in love that night

Time was winding down she said she had to go As we pulled in her drive she said y'all wanna come in for a cup of joe

She brewed a strong pot of coffee and turned down the lights I'll tell you we didn't sleep a wink all night

Years have come and gone now we're living near that Texas town We've got horses and some cows and a small ranch of our own

After a hard day in the saddle, we get the kids down right on cue She heads of to the kitchen I hear a pot begin to brew

She'll stand in the bedroom doorway in her boots and long T-shirt Say I've got the coffee brewing bring some in we'll have dessert

So I pour a couple mugs and turn off the kitchen light Here we go again, we won't sleep a wink tonight

 Chorus

Some cowgirls they drink lemonade, sweet tea or maybe beer Mine likes her coffee cause she runs in high gear

She likes it hot, she likes it strong - she like to sip it all night long When the cowgirl's on coffee you can't go wrong
